It uses the HEVC compression algorithm to store photos at roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPG, while keeping the same — or better — visual quality. However, JPG remains the universal standard for sharing images online, on Windows PCs, Android devices, and across social media platforms. Despite years of availability, HEIC is still not natively supported by many websites, apps, and image editors. WHAT IS A HEIC FILE?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is a modern image format created by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and adopted by Apple as the default photo format for iPhone and iPad starting with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra in 2017.
HEIC files are based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard and use the HEVC (H.265) video codec for compression. This allows HEIC to store a 12-megapixel photo in roughly 2–3 MB, compared to 5–6 MB for an equivalent JPG — saving significant space on your iPhone.
