HEIC VS JPG — WHICH FORMAT SHOULD YOU USE?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple’s default camera format, introduced with iOS 11 in 2017. It uses the HEVC compression algorithm to store photos at roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPG, while keeping the same — or better — visual quality. For iPhone users with limited storage, HEIC is an excellent format.

However, JPG remains the universal standard for sharing images online, on Windows PCs, Android devices, and across social media platforms. Despite years of availability, HEIC is still not natively supported by many websites, apps, and image editors. When you send a HEIC photo to a Windows user or upload it to a web form, you may encounter errors or blank thumbnails.

When to keep HEIC: Storing photos on your iPhone or iCloud where storage space matters and you only view them on Apple devices.

When to convert to JPG: Sharing via email, uploading to websites or online forms, editing in software like Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or Canva, posting to social media, or viewing on any non-Apple device.

When to convert to PNG: When you need a transparent background, or when you are converting graphics, screenshots, or illustrations rather than photographs. PNG is lossless, so it also suits situations where you want zero compression.

When to convert to WEBP: For web developers and bloggers who want smaller file sizes with good quality for websites. WEBP is supported by all modern browsers and offers better compression than JPG.

SUPPORTED OUTPUT FORMATS

JPG / JPEG

The most universally compatible image format in the world. Ideal for sharing photos via email, uploading to websites, printing, and viewing on any device. JPG uses lossy compression, making file sizes small while maintaining good visual quality.

PNG

A lossless format that preserves every pixel of the original image with no compression artifacts. Supports transparent backgrounds. Best for screenshots, graphics, logos, and images where quality is critical. PNG files are typically larger than JPG.

WEBP

Google's modern image format, designed for the web. WEBP offers significantly smaller file sizes than JPG at similar quality levels. Supported by all modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). Ideal for web developers optimizing page load speed.

BMP

An uncompressed raster format native to Windows. BMP files are very large but maintain perfect quality. Used in specific legacy software and Windows system contexts. Rarely needed for everyday photo sharing.

GIF

A format primarily used for simple animations and graphics with limited colors (up to 256). Not recommended for photographs. Useful if you need to create an animated sequence from multiple HEIC frames.

Everything You Need to Know About HEIC to JPG Conversion

What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple’s modern image format that saves space while maintaining quality. It’s the default format for photos taken on iPhone and iPad devices since iOS 11.

Why convert to JPG?

While HEIC is efficient, JPG is universally compatible with all devices, platforms, and websites. Converting to JPG ensures your images can be viewed and shared anywhere without compatibility issues.

Benefits of using this tool

WHAT IS A HEIC FILE?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is a modern image format created by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and adopted by Apple as the default photo format for iPhone and iPad starting with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra in 2017.

HEIC files are based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard and use the HEVC (H.265) video codec for compression. This allows HEIC to store a 12-megapixel photo in roughly 2–3 MB, compared to 5–6 MB for an equivalent JPG — saving significant space on your iPhone.

HEIC also supports features that JPG does not, including:

  • Live Photos (storing both the still image and the short video clip in one file)
  • Image sequences (multiple frames in a single file)
  • HDR and wide color (P3) data
  • Depth maps from Portrait mode
  • Lossless editing without recompression

Despite its technical advantages, HEIC has slow adoption outside the Apple ecosystem. Most Windows programs, Android apps, and websites do not support HEIC natively, which is why converting to JPG or PNG remains necessary for broad compatibility.

IS THIS HEIC CONVERTER SAFE TO USE?

Yes — completely. All conversion happens directly in your browser using local processing via JavaScript. Your files are never sent to any server, meaning no one else can ever access your images.

This is fundamentally different from most online converters, which upload your photos to a remote server to convert them, store them temporarily (or sometimes permanently), and then serve them back to you. With our tool, the entire conversion pipeline runs inside your browser tab. The moment you close the tab, everything is gone — there is nothing stored anywhere.

This approach is especially important for sensitive photos — personal images, business documents photographed as HEIC, or medical photos — where upload-based converters pose a real privacy risk.

HOW TO OPEN HEIC FILES ON WINDOWS WITHOUT CONVERTING

If you prefer to open HEIC files directly rather than convert them, Windows 11 and Windows 10 both have options:

Windows 11: You can open HEIC files natively by installing the free HEIF Image Extensions app from the Microsoft Store. Search for “HEIF Image Extensions” and install it — after that, Windows Photos and File Explorer will display HEIC thumbnails and open HEIC files directly.

Windows 10: The same HEIF Image Extensions app is available, but it costs $0.99 on Windows 10. Alternatively, some users install the free HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer if it is available to them.

Simplest option: If you just need to view or share the photo once, use our free HEIC to JPG converter — no installation, no cost, no account.

HOW TO STOP YOUR IPHONE FROM SAVING PHOTOS AS HEIC

If you want your iPhone to shoot photos directly as JPG instead of HEIC, you can change the camera format in Settings:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Scroll down and tap Camera
  3. Tap Formats
  4. Select Most Compatible

After this change, your iPhone camera will save photos as JPG (and videos as H.264) instead of HEIC and HEVC. This is useful if you frequently share photos with Windows users or upload to platforms that don’t support HEIC. The trade-off is that JPG files are larger, so they take up more storage on your device and in iCloud.
